Malelani Cafe presents a co-bill between Rusty & Jan and The Penny Lane Trio. Each ensemble will perform two 45 minute sets. Come out and dine on Malelani's expanded menu and listen to some good music. Artist Bios: Rusty and Jan are a husband and wife acoustic guitar and flute duo! Their collaboration began in December 2000, and since then they have been performing in the Philadelphia area. By utilizing their divergent backgrounds, they create modern interpretations of many well-known songs. They play a diverse assortment of styles including Original Music, Standards, Folk, Americana, Classical and much more!! The Penny Lane Trio performs unique covers and medleys of Beatles’ songs in the style of classic 1950s and 1960s era R&B and soul jazz. Think of it as Liverpool meets Memphis. Their set features mash-ups like the Beatles “I Feel Fine” mixed with James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” combined with Lennon & McCartney’s “Black Bird.” They draw from the R&B and soul musicians who influenced the Beatles, as well as soul jazz innovators like Horace Silver and Lee Morgan. If it’s got a horn section, they dig into it. The members include: Martha Michael on Trumpet and Flugelhorn, Richard Redding on Saxophone and Alto Recorder, and Jake Michael -- Singer and guitarist.
