Lyrics

Hippies don’t go down to meet on (South Street, South Street)
Dancin used to be elite on (South Street, South Street)
Side by side they’re loose and neat
Till they’re running down the street
They crouch and hide, while stores keep them locked outside! (Now baby)

If you’re, on South Street, oh yeah, keep your head down (Come on now)
When you’re on South Street
A gun might put you on the ground
Well you take Chestnut, Market They’ve got shootings, too
But South Street's had shootings long before me and you

Did you hear that shots were fired on? (South Street, South Street)
Children crawling in the street on? (South Street, South Street)
Everybody huddled round hiding from that awful sound
Now hit the ground, or you might get shot for hangin round

Instrumental Break

Careful, on South Street, oh yeah, keep your head down (Come on now)
When you’re on South Street, the Bullets can be found
Well you’ve got Temple, Drexel. They have shootings too
But South Street's had shootings long before both me and you

Octavius was on South Street ‘cause Blacks were scared to vote.
He tried to build schools where black kids could have hope
But men with power denied that they were free.
So he got shot like Alexis, Kris and me.

Oh Please be
Careful, on South Street, oh yeah, keep your head down (Come on now)
When you’re on South Street, the gunfights will abound
Well you’ve got Pashunk, Broad Street Guns are found there too
But South Street's had shootings long before me and you
South St is fading, soon it’s out of view.
If we don’t save South St. the Music dies there too
If you don’t save South St. the Music dies with you
